Lisdoonvarna is still the biggest matchmaking festival in Europe

Much more about entertainment than meeting your soul mate, Lisdoonvarna still represents an ancient Irish art.

The Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival is one of Ireland’s oldest traditional festivals and still one of the biggest event of its kind in Europe. Every September up to 60,000 people from all over the world come for the music, the dancing and the craic rather than a potential husband or wife.

Dancing takes place in venues all over town and in the newly reopened Spa Wells and there are official matchmakers on hand to bring hopeful singles together.

This was always an important role in Irish life, especially as our was such a rural society in which people found it difficult to meet others, or even to travel outside of the local area.

PerfectPartners may be a far more modern incarnation of the concept but, essentially, their roots remain firmly embedded in this ancient and charming but very important service.

“Grace and I are now engaged! Thank you so much for finding her for me. It’s like we were made for each other and I wonder what on Earth I did without her for all of those years! It was a worry because, as you know, I did not want to be in the public eye. I know society has moved on a lot but as a teacher I really couldn’t stand it if any of the kids I teach found an online profile for me. Your personal introductions were absolutely perfect – discrete and carefully handled. Thanks again – your invite is in the post!”
